About

Kolorist is a colour tool for designers and architects on iPhone, iPad and Mac. Build palettes across colour spaces, check contrast and colour vision, see colours in the light where they will be used – and get them into the tools you already use. EVERY COLOUR SPACE • Edit in OKLCH, OKLab, CIE LCH, CIELab, Munsell, HSB, HSL, RGB and CMYK • Display P3 side by side with sRGB, Adobe RGB, Rec. 2020, ProPhoto RGB, CMYK or any ICC profile – mapped, never clipped • Enter CMYK or RGB directly in an ICC profile, and get clean CMYK values (UCR/GCR) • Type hex, CSS colours, Munsell notation or descriptions like “deep ocean blue” COLOUR LIBRARIES, ICC PROFILES AND FILAMENT • Import your own colour charts in ASE, ACO or ACB with named tones – colours, tones and harmonies are locked to the tones • Filament colours for 3D printing: more than 2,200 colours from 150 manufacturers, most of them measured – find the nearest filament • Your own ICC profiles, synced through iCloud Drive • Convert between profiles, and investigate colour difference with ΔE2000 GRADIENTS, TONES AND HARMONIES • Gradients in equal perceptual steps in OKLab, with lighter and darker rows and CSS gradients • Tone scales from 50 to 950 • Harmonies – from complementary to triad, square and analogous with an accent – on an OKLCH, CIE LCH, Munsell, Hering, HSL or RYB colour wheel, with natural lightness order LIGHT AND COLOUR MEASUREMENT • See colours and whole palettes in viewing conditions – the living room in the evening, the office – or standard viewing conditions for graphic arts, workplaces, schools and museums • Colours that change character, and colour pairs that become hard to tell apart in dim light or under fluorescent and LED lighting • Measure the light with the camera and save it as a viewing condition – colour temperature and illuminance • Compensate the colours you pick for the light with a grey card or reference card (beta) ACCESSIBILITY AND COLOUR VISION • WCAG 2.2 contrast: AA and AAA, large text and graphics, and auto-fix that adjusts the colour until it passes • Text contrast and critique of whole palettes • Surface contrast with LRV to BS 8300 and NS 11001 – in the chosen light too • See palettes with protan, deutan and tritan deficiencies and achromatopsia – and which colours become hard to tell apart • Camera with a colour vision filter PICK COLOURS • Camera with zoom, macro focus and torch • Photos, with dominant colours • Colours you pick are kept until you save them APPLE INTELLIGENCE ON DEVICE • From value words to a palette – “calm, warm, Nordic” – grounded in a knowledge base of more than a hundred colour concepts, with legible contrast • Describe a colour, adjust with free text, name colours and get a critique of your palette Everything runs on device. Without Apple Intelligence, palettes are built straight from the knowledge base. SHARE, SAVE AND EXPORT • Share colours, palettes, gradients and harmonies as links – recipients without the app see them in their browser • Save as: choose formats by where the files will be used – ASE, ACO, Design Tokens, CSS, SwiftUI, GPL, SVG, hex, PDF and snippets with editable gradients for layout apps • “Copy to” design, layout, photo and presentation apps, gradients too – colours in the format they were saved in, for example CMYK • Print palettes on A4 in CIELab PALETTES AND ICLOUD Collect colours and gradients in palettes, save single colours and whole gradients, and sync through your own private iCloud. OPEN ABOUT METHODS The app shows the methods it builds on – OKLab, CIEDE2000, CAM16, WCAG, LRV, Munsell and ICC – with source and explanation.
