About

You walked in. Now walk back out. Breadcrumb drops a GPS crumb behind you every ten metres or so as you go. When you want to head back, tap Return and a large arrow points to the crumb you passed last. Reach it and the arrow moves to the one before, and the one before that, all the way out. Your phone buzzes each time you arrive at one, so you can keep your eyes on the ground. That is the whole app. THERE IS NO MAP, ON PURPOSE Most trail apps hand you a map and ask you to download it before you leave. If you forgot, or you wandered somewhere nobody has mapped, the screen is a white rectangle and you are on your own. Breadcrumb draws the only line that matters: the one you made. Your trail appears as a sketch of your own walk, turn for turn, with the arrow showing you the next step along it. Nothing to download, nothing to plan the night before. GPS DOES NOT NEED A SIGNAL This surprises people. The satellites broadcast and your phone listens — no bars required, no data. What thick tree cover takes away is not the connection, it is the precision. WHEN THE SKY DISAPPEARS Under a heavy canopy, Breadcrumb keeps going on your step count and your compass heading, and marks that stretch as estimated rather than drawing a confident straight line through trees you never walked past. If the guesswork drifts too far to be trusted, it stops guessing and leaves a visible gap instead. A gap you can see is safer than a line that lies to you. MARK WHAT YOU WILL WONDER ABOUT LATER One tap on the way in, and you will not stand there second-guessing yourself on the way out: - Forks, for the moment two paths look identical in reverse - Landmarks worth recognising again - Hazards to come back around, not through - Water — a stream, a spring, a crossing Each one takes a short note if you want it. BUILT FOR A PHONE IN A POCKET Recording continues with the screen locked and the phone away. It warns you as the battery drops and eases off to a lighter tracking rhythm to stretch what is left. If the app is closed mid-walk, it picks the trail back up when you reopen it and marks the piece it missed as a gap rather than pretending it was there. Your trails stay until you delete them. WHAT IT DOES NOT DO No account. No sign-up. No servers. No cloud. No ads. No analytics. Nothing to log into. Everything lives on this phone, and no trail you record is sent anywhere. A WORD ABOUT SAFETY Breadcrumb is an orientation tool, not a rescue device. It knows the way you came and nothing else — not the weather, not a shorter route, not whether the trail ahead is passable. Carry a map and compass, tell someone where you are going, and treat this as one more thing in the pack rather than a replacement for any of that. English, Spanish and Portuguese. Made by an indie developer who took a wrong turn on a wooded trail and spent an hour finding out the map he had downloaded stopped exactly where the trail did.
