About
Telltale is a planning companion for sailors: coastal wind that knows the land, weather routing, storm alerts, anchor watch and the ship's log. TELLTALE COASTAL WIND Global forecast models see the coast in cells tens of kilometres wide, so both sides of an island get the same wind. Telltale Coastal Wind (TCW) takes that forecast and works out what the terrain does to it: acceleration around headlands and over ridges, funnelling through gaps and channels, wind shadows in the lee, and the turn of the wind along the shore. You see the wind and gusts where you will actually be sailing. TCW is built from ECMWF, ICON or GFS and labelled TCW-E, TCW-I or TCW-G, so you always know which forecast is underneath. • High-resolution cruising grounds, 500 m or finer: Ionian, Saronic & Cyclades, Dodecanese, North Aegean, Crete, Dalmatia, Lycian coast, Tyrrhenian, Sicily & Malta, Riviera & Corsica, Gulf of Lion, Balearics, Alborán & the Strait, Algarve & Cádiz, Portugal, Galicia & Biscay, Atlantic France, the Swiss lakes and Hong Kong. • 1 km coastal wind along the rest of Europe's coasts, from the Mediterranean and Black Sea to the Channel, North Sea, Baltic, Norway and Iceland. • Elsewhere in Europe and the Mediterranean, the model's own wind with no coastal correction, clearly labelled. More regions are coming. WEATHER AROUND THE BOAT • Cloud and rain from DWD's ICON-D2 (about 2 km, central Europe) and ICON-EU (about 7 km, Europe and the Mediterranean). • Chance of rain from a 40-member ensemble, and chance of lightning from DWD's lightning index. • Live lightning strikes over Europe from EUMETSAT's weather satellite. • Storm alerts for your anchorage and your destination, with Find shelter and squall exposure when a storm is coming. • Isobars, pressure, swell and gusts on the chart. • Weather Analyser briefings that set out the facts, the assessment and the sources behind it. PLAN THE PASSAGE • Weather routing through the forecast for your boat's polars, with coastline, depth and hazards as constraints. • Choose your departure time and keep every run for comparison. • Import and export routes as GPX. AT ANCHOR • Anchorage advice: how sheltered you are from the wind and swell to come. • Anchor watch: set the swing circle and get an alarm if the boat drags. FIRST MATE Ask First Mate about your boat, the weather and the passage ahead, or analyse a photo of your sails or the sky. First Mate uses Anthropic's AI. Telltale asks for your permission before anything is sent, and you can change your choice in Settings. LOGBOOK AND THE BOAT • Voyages record themselves: track, distance, time under way and regular log entries. • Vessel details, equipment, maintenance tasks and energy, shared with your crew. • Optional Bosun: a small onboard box that reads your instruments and runs Telltale on the boat's own WiFi. No hardware is needed to use the app; without it Telltale uses your phone's GPS. SUBSCRIPTIONS Weather, routing, anchor watch and the logbook are free. Subscriptions add First Mate for the whole boat and are shared by its crew: • Harbour: a small shared monthly First Mate (AI) allowance. • Sailing: a larger shared monthly First Mate (AI) allowance for your time aboard. • Boat Watch add-on: remote updates and alerts from compatible onboard hardware while you are ashore. • AI credit: a one-time purchase that tops up the shared allowance and does not expire. Requires Harbour or Sailing. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Payment is charged to your App Store account, and you can manage or cancel in your account settings. Restore purchases from Settings. Thunderstorms on the weather graph: when the forecast expects lightning, a bolt now appears under the cloud band for that hour, next to the raindrops, so a stormy afternoon stands out at a glance.
