About

Every day, one word from another language that English needs a whole sentence for. The Portuguese ache for something that may never come back. The Japanese light that filters through leaves. The Danish comfort of a candle and a closed door. One card a day, beautifully set, with the meaning and the origin on the back. A CARD, NOT A FEED Open the app and there is today's word. Turn the card for what it means, where it comes from and how it is said. That is the whole ritual, and it takes a minute. CHECKED, NOT SCRAPED Every card is checked against a source-language dictionary, a corpus or a native speaker before it is published, and the back of each card says which. Where a word is often called untranslatable but is not, the card says it needs a phrase in English rather than claiming it cannot be translated. Reports are read every week and corrections are published. KEEP THE ONES THAT STAY WITH YOU Keep a card and it goes on your own shelf. Share a card as an image, set in the palette it was published in, from the share sheet. THE WHOLE SHELF Today's card is free, and so are the last fourteen days. One payment opens every card that has passed out of that window and every one that passes out of it from now on, and adds two more card palettes. No subscription, nothing renews, nothing to cancel. PRIVACY No account and no sign-in. Kept cards and counters live on this iPhone only. Untranslatable Daily carries no adverts, no analytics SDK and no tracking, and it never asks for tracking permission.Read more
