About
KanjiKaku teaches you to write Japanese by hand and corrects you the way a teacher would. You draw each kanji with your finger. The app checks the shape, the direction and the order of every stroke, and when something is wrong it shows the correct stroke over yours, so you see exactly what to change. WHAT IT CORRECTS • A stroke drawn backwards or out of order • A radical in the wrong place: the pieces are right, but not where they belong • Two radicals that look alike, such as 日 and 目 or 土 and 士 • Proportions that drift, judged more strictly as you get to know the word • Look-alike kanji, put side by side in the exercises until you tell them apart These are the mistakes most students of Japanese make, and the app names each one instead of marking the whole kanji wrong. FROM THE KANJI TO THE SENTENCE You start with the kanji. From each kanji you jump to the words that use it, and from each word to real sentences with furigana, translation and voice. Reading, meaning and writing are trained separately, so you always know what you master and what still needs work. WHAT'S INSIDE • Over 2,000 kanji and 19,000 words, all on your phone • More than 15,000 example sentences with furigana, translation and voice • Every kanji broken down into its radicals, and the radicals into theirs • 1,950 origin stories that tie the shape of a character to its meaning • Search by meaning, by reading, or by drawing the kanji you half remember • Read the kanji and words in a photo: point the camera at a sign or a page • Decks by JLPT level, from N5 to N1, by Japanese school grade, and your own IT KNOWS WHAT YOU NEED TO REVIEW Spaced repetition brings each kanji and each word back on the day it is about to slip, and not before. The app remembers where you failed, whether it was the reading, the writing or the meaning, and asks you exactly that. What you get wrong comes back until you get it right; what you master stops taking up your time. HOW IT TEACHES A new kanji is introduced before you are tested on it: you see it written, you learn what it means, you trace it, and only then does it enter your reviews. The first time you meet a character you write it several times, not once. Writing is graded by how well you already know the word: at first a wobbly line is forgiven; later it is not. TWELVE LANGUAGES Interface, meanings and origin stories in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, Polish, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Korean. The meanings of every kanji and every word are written in your language. YOUR DATA STAYS ON YOUR PHONE No account, no sign-up, no ads. Nothing you write, draw or answer leaves the device, and studying needs no connection. FREE TO START, ONE PAYMENT FOR THE REST 50 kanji are free, with no time limit: the first 50 of the N5 path, with more than 600 words that use them and their example sentences, plus the writing canvas and the search.
