About
Earth’s magnetic field responds constantly to solar activity, solar wind disturbances, and various space weather events. These can show up as geomagnetic storms, shifts in auroral activity, and slower changes like the South Atlantic Magnetic Anomaly. Storms can affect satellites, GPS, aviation routes, power grids, and the earth’s ecosystems, making it important to be able to forecast disruptances. Geo Space Weather shows the state of the earth’s magnetic field with respect to various space weather events. It pulls live magnetic field readings from ground stations across the US along with the standard Kp and Dst storm indices, and turns them into a simple current state: quiet, onset, storm, or recovery, representing the health or state of the magnetic field. The app includes an interactive map which lets you layer field data with the aurora, current solar position, power grid risk, and IGRF field values, so you can see which regions might be at risk during space weather disturbances. The app also includes sunspot prediction models which predict the sunspots for the 11-year solar with month-level granularity, and longer-term predictions. There is also a simplified view of how far the magnetic field has drifted from its normal quiet state, a monthly ocean climate index (ENSO/ONI), and a filterable, searchable feed of space weather news pulled from public sources.Read more
