Know which cover is worth your boots before you leave the truck. Apex reads the state and federal forest inventory for every stand of public land in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota: what is growing there, how old it is, and how thick the understory is. It scores that as grouse and woodcock habitat, groups the best of it into coverts, ranks them by how far you would walk, and puts them on a map that works with no signal. This is habitat intelligence, not a feed of pins. A score of 78 means the cover is strong right now: the right type, at the right age, with food and escape cover close by. It does not promise a bird. Hunt a 78 ten times and you will move more birds than on a 40.
