About
Say it, and it arrives in another language. And what was said stays, as a record. If you only need to be understood right now, the translator already on your iPhone is enough. Utsushi is for the times when you need to know later what was actually said. Negotiations, meetings, service counters: there are rooms where reading it back afterwards matters as much as being understood in the moment. __________ Choose the pair of languages Any pair your iPhone can both transcribe and translate. Japanese and Chinese, Japanese and English, English and Korean — change the pair in settings whenever you like. Put one iPhone between the two of you and talk. Which side is speaking is worked out from the shape of the characters that come back. That means languages written in the same script — English and French, say — cannot be told apart. Pick such a pair and the app says so on screen. __________ What stays - The original and the translation, kept as a pair Which language each line was spoken in is kept too, so you can follow who said what. - The audio stays as well Tap a line in a record and it jumps to that moment. You can check a translation by ear. - You can fix it afterwards When a line was misheard, you can correct both the original and the translation. Corrected lines carry a mark, and the same mark appears in the text you share — so what the machine heard and what a person rewrote never blur together. - You can decide how certain words are translated Company names, product names, terms you want rendered a particular way. Import and export as CSV. - Take it out as a bilingual text Original and translation side by side, ready for mail or notes. __________ Showing it to the other person There is a view that turns the top half 180 degrees, so the two of you can sit across one iPhone and each read your own language. __________ About paying The interpreting itself stays free, always. What's gated is keeping records, exporting, and the glossary. Everything is open for 7 days. After that, choose a one-time purchase or a monthly plan. The one-time purchase is paid once, with nothing after that. __________ Before you start - The data for the languages you use is fetched once, the first time, if your iPhone doesn't already have it. Please do this on Wi-Fi. - Speech recognition and translation use what is built into iPhone. The quality of a translation follows from that. - Audio and text stay on this iPhone. And what was said stays, as a record.

■ Records can now line up over iCloud Records now line up across iPhones on the same Apple ID. Turn it on under "Where records are kept" in Settings. It is off by default. What a record holds may be the substance of a negotiation, so whether it goes to iCloud is yours to decide. Turn it on and your records — the earlier ones too — are kept in your own iCloud. Nothing is sent to the developer. Audio does not sync. It stays on the iPhone that recorded it. Also: short Chinese greetings are judged more accurately, a short introduction appears the first time, and playback and export have been f…
