About
Sages of the 4th World gathers the voices of the sages: Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu, the seers of the Upanishads and Shankara, Dogen and Huineng, Rumi, Hafiz and Ibn Arabi, Kabir and Milarepa, Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus, Meister Eckhart and Teresa of Avila, Ramana Maharshi, and nearer our own time Emerson, Thoreau and Whitman, Vivekananda, Tagore and Rilke, D.T. Suzuki, Ajahn Chah, Hazrat Inayat Khan, Kahlil Gibran and Carl Jung. The 4th world is the Kali Yuga, the last and darkest of the four ages in the old Indian reckoning, the one we are said to be living in. These are the teachers who spoke into it, from every era and from 28 traditions, and what they say, again and again, is one thing: that the seer and the seen are not two. Non-duality is the thread that runs through the whole library. Much of this would otherwise stay buried in old translations, and the app is an attempt to bring the sages into a modern form and make their wisdom more accessible to all seekers. Over 1,200 sittings from 325 sages, from a quarter of an hour to well over an hour, each one narrated aloud and set in a place. WHAT A SITTING IS A sitting is a meditation woven from a single sage's own words: passages chosen from the source text, set in order, and read slowly with silence between them. Nearly all of the library is exactly that, the sage speaking. A few dozen are stories from the old books or deep guided practices. You choose a tradition or a teacher, or let the app choose for you, and press play. A PLACE AROUND YOU Put AirPods on and the sitting happens somewhere. Wind moves through the trees behind you, rain falls on the canopy, crickets sing low in the grass, a bell rings far off now and then. Everything is a real field recording, placed around you in space. The soundscape takes full advantage of AirPods spatial audio and head tracking: the world is anchored to the room, so when you turn your head it stays where it is and the voice stays where it was. Beneath it all runs a bed of ambient music, slow drones and quiet instrumentals chosen to sit under a voice and never compete with it. Five moods shape the whole soundscape in one tap: Immersive, Dry, Deep, Wild and Still. Or open the Ambiance sheet and shape it yourself: the wind and the rain, the night and the bell, the size of the room, the music. Every layer is optional. Turn them all off and it is the voice alone, with the silence between. It plays on any headphones or the speaker too; AirPods add full spatial immersion. MADE FOR LONG LISTENING The place breathes on a slow rhythm. It drifts. It opens out over the first minutes. If you go still, it goes quiet around you. Nothing sharp, nothing sudden, and every sitting begins from silence. YOUR HANDS NEVER LEAVE YOUR LAP With AirPods on, shake your head and the sitting steps back a passage. Nod, and the narrator pauses to tell you where you are. WHERE AM I? Lost the thread? Nod with AirPods on, or tap Where am I? on the subtitles screen, and the same voice tells you who is speaking and to whom, where the scene is set, what the passage you were in is saying in plain words, and what every name and term in it means. Then the passage begins again. WHAT IS FREE Over 150 sittings play on install, along with an introduction to every tradition.
