About
The word of the day, with its dictionary source. Five new words a day, in a few minutes: the definition, an example, where it comes from and which dictionary it is taken from. And the ones you did not know come back when they are due. Did you know melancholy comes from the Greek for black bile, the humour once blamed for the mood? That usufruct is the right to use someone else’s property without being able to sell it? That there is a whole family for the words that belong here, like gumption? HOW IT WORKS A small deck is waiting for you each day: the new words and the ones due for review, in one pile. One card, one word. Tap it and it opens. Swipe right if you already knew it, left if it is new to you. A few minutes and you are done. ALWAYS WITH A SOURCE Every entry says which reference dictionary it comes from and under which headword. No rushed definitions and no pub-quiz etymologies: when an origin is disputed, the card says so. WHAT IS NEW COMES BACK Five boxes. Every word you get right moves up a box and waits longer to return: the next day, three days, a week, two weeks, a month. Get it wrong and it goes back to the first. Every three new cards, a question turns up: one word and three definitions, one of them right, all from the same bank. It is not an exam: it is how a word comes round again when it is due. TWELVE FAMILIES Feelings, nature, body, science, arts, society, time, character, objects, motion, senses and local culture. Pick the ones you like and the deck comes from there. Six for free; all twelve with Premium. HEAR IT, ASK ABOUT IT If your phone has a voice for your language, every word can be played aloud. Under it you can ask “where does it come from?” or “how do I use it?”, or ask for three example sentences. An AI answers, and the app says so plainly: the entries carry a dictionary source; what the AI writes does not, and it is never stored. THE ARCHIVE Every word you have seen stays, with a search that ignores accents and filters by family and by box. The 42 most recent for free; the full archive with Premium. PLAY WITH SOMEONE Turn-based matches against another person, by link or at random: true or false on a word and a definition. The duel: two people, one phone. The challenge: ten words to send to anyone you like. No chat. And Game Center leaderboards and achievements. THE STREAK AND THE WIDGET A day counts when you swipe one card, and you can pause it when you go on holiday. With the widget, the word of the day sits on your Home Screen. IN YOUR LANGUAGE Catalan, Spanish and English, following your system language. Each language has its own words, chosen from its own dictionaries: they are not translations. NO ACCOUNT, NO ADS WordShot works in full with no account, and what you read stays on your phone. If you want it on more than one device, you can sign in with Apple. No ads and no trackers. It is not a health app and it makes no claim about your memory: it brings sourced words and asks you about them again. WHAT’S FREE Five new words a day plus the reviews that are due, the quiz, the streak, six families, the 42 most recent words in the Archive, three AI uses a day, two open matches and three challenges a day.
