About
Grammar Index Grade 3 to 8 is a child-friendly English grammar reference for elementary and middle school students, the parents helping them with homework, the teachers building lessons, and English learners of any age. WHAT'S INSIDE 124 grammar topics written for Grades 3 to 8, in eight sections you can browse or search: • Parts of Speech — nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns and pronoun case, prepositions, conjunctions (coordinating, subordinating, and correlative), articles, interjections, helping and modal verbs, and the order of adjectives. • Verbal Forms — the simple, perfect, and progressive tenses, infinitives, gerunds, participles, verb mood, and transitive and intransitive verbs. • Sentence Structure — subjects and objects, independent and dependent clauses, prepositional phrases, simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences, fragments, run-ons, and misplaced modifiers. • Syntax Rules — subject-verb and pronoun-antecedent agreement, active and passive voice, transition words, Standard English, register, and concise writing. • Mechanics — capital letters, apostrophes, prefixes, suffixes, Greek and Latin roots, plural nouns, synonyms, antonyms, and homophones. • Punctuation — periods, commas (including the serial comma, commas in compound sentences, and commas in dates and addresses), question marks, exclamation points, quotation marks, semicolons, colons, hyphens, dashes, parentheses, ellipses, and titles of works. • Phonics — phonemes, graphemes, syllables, digraphs, vowel teams, r-controlled vowels, silent e, sight words, and General American pronunciation. • Imagery & Poetry — simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, idiom, pun, alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition, rhyme, and rhythm. Every topic card opens to a plain-English definition, three right examples with the key word marked, one wrong example with a friendly explanation of the mistake, and a small grammar joke. The examples use American spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation, and a recurring cast of fictional characters — no real people and no brands. LEARN, PRACTICE, AND CHECK • Learning path — five stages (Reading & Phonics, Narrative Writing, Poetry, Informational Writing, and Grammar, Usage & Mechanics) that check off as topics are read. • Quiz — a five-question multiple-choice quiz drawn from the topics you have studied. The questions, the answer order, and the wrong answers change on every retake. • Spelling Test — 996 words in US spelling, each with a sentence and a meaning, sorted into Grades 3–5 and Grades 6–8 word lists. • Exercises — one graded exercise for each part of the curriculum, a record of scores over time, a Todo list of the topics to reread, and a retest that opens as soon as the reading is done. • Quick card — a one-screen summary of any topic. • A study tip on the home screen, and a gentle streak and points that never punish a missed day. READ-ALOUD AND EASY READING • Tap the speaker on any topic, example, tip, or spelling word to hear it read aloud by a narrator, with the device's own voice filling in where needed. • An easy-read font, background tints for visual stress, a focus mode with fewer distractions, and a focus timer.
