Distance gets you across the flats fast; vertical gain is what gets you up the headwalls. No partial credit, no shortcuts — the mountain doesn't grade on a curve. WEATHER YOU CAN SEE COMING Storms roll in on a forecast you can watch three days out. Reach camp in time and you're sheltered. Get caught exposed and the front pushes you back to the last camp you reached — never past it, never further than that. The mountain sets you back. It never blames you for the weather.
