About

OCTONION is a mind puzzle about composition that refuses to behave. You are not adding numbers. You are multiplying thoughts. The game takes place in an 8-dimensional algebra whose units — e₀ through e₇ — sit on the Fano plane, a seven-point, seven-line diagram that encodes every product. Two elements never commute. Three elements almost never associate. The expression (ab)c is a different object from a(bc). Order is not preference. Order is ontology. A puzzle arrives already flattened: eight units reduced to a diagram a pair of eyes can hold. It occupies eight directions that can’t be redundant across the full line but can be redundant across half a line (only once). Most products stay unreadable; this one becomes playable. If the mind can figure the perfect 8-dimensional arrangement, it will create a jianpu music piece. The rules are never stated in language. Fail in a particular sequence and you discover that the same three elements, grouped differently, yield three different worlds. The game trains a kind of attention that ordinary arithmetic never requires: you must hold dimensions in your brain like you hold the moon and the stars. There is neither timer nor score. You either create music or you do not. Success feels like the moment a mathematician stops writing and simply hears the music. The later puzzles stop asking you to reach a target and start asking you to stabilize one — to find compositions that remain invariant under the algebra’s own twisted symmetries. OCTONION is not a game that rewards being clever in the usual sense. It rewards becoming briefly, locally, 8-dimensional. — Frankie FanoRead more
