About

Ballast is the weight that keeps a ship upright in a storm. This app is built for the ten minutes when the storm hits — for anyone quitting a compulsive habit they would rather not explain, and the urges that come with it. Most apps in this category shame you when you slip. That's exactly backwards — shame is what makes people delete the app on the day they most need it. Ballast treats a slip as information. You log it, you learn something from it, the clock starts again. WHEN AN URGE HITS One tap gets you a four-step flow that works with how urges actually behave: box breathing to settle your body, your own reasons in your own words, a countdown while the urge crests and passes, and only then a question about what happened. There's a Control Centre button too, so it's one swipe away from anywhere on your phone. SEE YOUR OWN PATTERN Every urge you log — including the ones you ride out — builds a picture. Ballast shows you which triggers actually drive your urges, and a heatmap of the exact days and hours you're most at risk. Most people are genuinely surprised. Then it can warn you 30 minutes before your hardest window, instead of consoling you afterwards. A STREAK THAT MEANS SOMETHING Days clear, counted honestly on the wall clock, with milestones from day one to a full year. A Home Screen and Lock Screen widget keeps it in front of you without opening the app. SOMETHING TO DO INSTEAD Quitting works better when something takes the space. Track replacement habits, check in once a day, and read short, straight pieces about how urges and habits work — written without the dopamine-detox pseudoscience the rest of this category runs on. BUILT TO BE PRIVATE No account. No sign-up. No server. Everything you write stays on your phone, and nothing on your Home Screen says what the app is for. Lock it behind Face ID if you want. FREE, AND PAID The streak, the full urge flow and the daily check-in are free forever — an app that withholds help mid-urge doesn't deserve to charge for it. Ballast Pro adds Insights, your full history, unlimited habits and data export. Ballast is a self-tracking tool, not treatment. If this is affecting your work, your relationships or your safety, talking to someone qualified is worth more than any streak.
