About

Point your camera at the water and the app finds the river you are standing beside, drawn from Ordnance Survey's map of over 100,000 named British watercourses. You can see its colour live, named from a palette of 600 freshwater shades—Pooled Bronze, Chalk Stream, Peat Tea. Tap the shutter and the colour is saved to the app. Your very own river journal Your captures gather in a journal you can read as a timeline or organised by river. Open a river to see a maps of its course, a colour bar of the whole year you can scrub through with your thumb, and every capture you have made there. A shared map On the map, rivers are tinted by recent captures from everyone using the app. Fresh readings show strongly and fade over a week, so the map always shows an up-to-date picture. Explore and share your captures A short field note accompanies each capture that includes the weather preceding it. You can also explore all 600 colours to learn more. Share any of your captures as a specimen card with your local community. Private by design No account is needed. Your captures are stored anonymously; sign in with Apple only if you want to keep them across devices. Other people see the colour and river of your captures, but never your exact position. Data is stored in the EU. Delete any capture, or your whole account, at any time. Water Colour works anywhere in Great Britain. It needs your camera and, while you use it, your location.
