Placigins

You pass by place names every day, but do you know the stories behind them? From indigenous roots to forgotten founders, the map is filled with hidden histories. Placigins (short for place origins) automatically detects when you arrive at one of more than 29,000 curated locations across the United States and delivers the origin story and a surprising fun fact right to your screen. Placigins runs quietly in the background as you explore landmarks, neighborhoods, cities, and counties across the country. When you enter a featured location, a notification delivers its name origin story exactly when it matters most—while you’re actually there. Every discovery is automatically saved to your history, letting you revisit the full narrative and fun facts anytime. Whether you’re crossing state lines on a road trip or finally satisfying your curiosity about your morning commute, Placigins is for anyone who prefers to learn history from the place itself, not from a textbook.
