About

Fossil Timeline is a field guide to the history of life, arranged the way geologists read the rock record: by geological age. Scroll a column from the Ediacaran to today. Each interval uses the age boundaries of the International Chronostratigraphic Chart and the familiar colors of that chart. Open an interval to see reference occurrences — a taxon, the formation it came from, the region, and the environment — then save the notes you want to keep. Saved notes stay on your device. WHAT YOU CAN DO • Read the geological column from 635 million years ago to the present • Open periods from the Cambrian through the Quaternary • Filter occurrences by marine, land, or freshwater settings • Compare two intervals side by side • Follow groups such as trilobites, dinosaurs, ammonoids, and early whales across time • Search by taxon, formation, region, or age • Save reference notes on this iPhone, with no account SUPPORT A support link opens the Paleobiology Database in Safari: https://paleobiodb.org Fossil Timeline is an independent educational app. It is not the Paleobiology Database and is not affiliated with it. The notes inside the app are original teaching examples for learning how an occurrence record is read. The research catalog, downloads, and contact information are on the official website. Ages are given in millions of years before present (Ma).Read more
