About
Every "best places to live" list is somebody else's weighting of somebody else's data, delivered as a rank with no way to see inside it. Eden Index inverts that. Eden Index publishes one transparent, reproducible score for all 3,144 US counties and 925 metro and micropolitan areas — built from twelve categories of federal open data: cost of living, housing, safety, schools, climate, climate risk, healthcare, mobility, outdoors, culture, economy & wages, and community. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT • The weights are yours. The default weighting is an editorial judgment, labeled as one — never presented as a neutral truth. Move the sliders and every rank recomputes instantly, right on your device. • Every number is traceable. Tap a score to see the categories behind it. Tap a category to see its indicators. Tap an indicator to see the raw value, its units, its source, and the date that source was published. • The gaps are stated, not hidden. Where a place has no monitor or a suppressed estimate, Eden Index says so and marks the score's coverage — it never quietly fills the hole with an average and presents the result with false confidence. • Unmeasured never means zero. A category that can't be measured for a place has its weight redistributed across what can be measured, so a data gap never unfairly drags a place down. • It works with no signal. Scoring, reweighing, ranking, and the map all run on a factset that ships on your device — instant and available in a canyon. Richer detail (raw values, hazard breakdowns, imagery) comes from our API when you have a connection, and the app tells you plainly when a panel needs one. A SCORE, NOT A GRADE A place's score is a percentile within a stated pool — a way to compare, not a verdict. The methodology, the weighting vector, and what's measured versus what isn't all travel with every score, versioned and visible. OPEN DATA, OPEN API The same factset that powers the app is served by a public, documented, read-only API at api.clerkofeden.com, so the data underneath Eden Index is available to build on, not locked inside one app. Eden Index is built for anyone weighing a move, a relocation for work, or just curious how their county stacks up — and for anyone tired of being handed someone else's answer with no way to check it.Read more
