About
Small-town America, 1989. You inherit a dusty antique shop, a debt, and a magnifying glass. Everything that walks through that door is a judgment call. Every customer brings a piece and a story — an inheritance, a dowry chest, a flea market find, an estate being cleared. The story is part of the evidence. Ask where it came from, how old they think it is, whether there are papers, whether it has been repaired. Contradictions show up on the item card in rust-colored ink. Then look closer. Sweep the magnifier across the piece for hallmarks, seams, wear patterns and tool marks. Every tell you find fills the authenticity meter — and every wrong spot costs you the customer's patience. Skill never hands you the answer: the meter tops out short of certainty, and the last call is always yours. Buy it wrong and it hurts. A replica bought at real prices is a slow loss — you can still sell it honestly as a replica and keep your name clean, but pass a fake off as genuine and your reputation pays. Stamp a genuine piece as fake and you insult a customer who will remember. Then the other half of the trade. Haggle in both directions with the same nerve: four rounds, a hidden acceptance range, a tone you choose — soft, hard, hurt or outright bluff. Lowball too hard and the customer walks. Send damaged pieces to the watchmaker, the cabinetmaker or the jeweler, each with their own fee, speed and risk of a botched job. Price what you keep, put it in the window, and watch collectors come looking for exactly the category they are obsessed with. Pay the installment. Grow the shop from dusty backroom to proper gallery. Learn a category well enough that its tells surface early. Become the antique king. • Real appraisal: interrogation, magnifier evidence, and an authenticity call that stays yours • Fakes that are worth catching — and worth selling honestly when you miss • Three-way haggling: sellers, collectors and restorers • An honest economy of rarity, condition, reputation, mastery and debt • Hand-inked comic art, full-cast character portraits • No ads, no subscription, fully offline, fully localizedRead more
