About
AeroRadar is an observation radar for the air traffic around you, on the ground or in the air: ADS-B aircraft from the adsb.fi and adsb.lol community networks, FLARM gliders from the Open Glider Network, on a radar dial or on a map. It is not an aviation safety tool, and never an anti-collision system. THE SKY AROUND YOU • Live ADS-B traffic from adsb.fi and adsb.lol, queried together so their coverage adds up, a new picture at most every 5 seconds. • Ranges of 10, 25, 50 and 100 km on the dial, 250 km on the map, in kilometers or nautical miles. • Tap an aircraft for its registration, type, altitude, speed, heading and distance. Altitudes in meters then feet (3,353 m · 11,000 ft), speeds in km/h or knots. • Altitude filter: an adjustable ceiling from 500 to 30,000 ft, or none, and aircraft on the ground shown or hidden. • When a network call fails, the aircraft on screen stay, with the age of their data. DIAL AND MAP • A radar dial that puts you at the center, with four range rings, north-up or in Compass mode. • A map that puts the same traffic back on the terrain, with dashed heading vectors and labels. • Dark by default, light if you prefer. iPhone and iPad, portrait or landscape. • Energy saver refreshes every 10 seconds instead of 5: half the network wake-ups, and the radar stays active. TRAFFIC SOURCES • FLARM traffic (gliders, tow planes, hang gliders, paragliders) from the volunteer Open Glider Network, with distinct icons and GPS altitudes; an aircraft seen by both networks appears once. • Pilots who opted out of OGN tracking are never shown. • Each source has its colour: ADS-B, FLARM and radio beacons, pilots’ apps, computed MLAT positions. • FLARM, Apps and MLAT switch off one by one in Preferences. With FLARM and Apps off, the connection to the Open Glider Network closes. TRAFFIC OUTPUT • AeroRadar feeds the navigation app running on this same device as a FLARM-NMEA receiver on TCP port 2000 (host 127.0.0.1): nothing leaves the device. For any app that accepts a FLARM or NMEA source at an address of your choice. • Up to 32 targets per burst, closest first, never a position older than 30 seconds; the stream carries the traffic plus your own position. • While output is on, AeroRadar feeds your navigation app from the background and follows your aircraft, blue location indicator visible; with another app in front, the radar refreshes every 10 seconds. PRIVACY • No account, no ads, no analytics, no trackers, no third-party SDK, no in-app purchases. • Your approximate position, rounded to about 1 km, goes to adsb.fi, adsb.lol and, while the FLARM source or the Apps source is on, to the Open Glider Network, for one purpose only: selecting the traffic around you. Nothing identifies you or your device; the OGN login line names the app, the same for everyone. • Airline routes and some registrations come from adsbdb.com, asked by the aircraft’s callsign or address. • Receive-only by design: your position, or your aircraft’s, is never broadcast as a beacon visible to others. • Preferences stay on the device, and disappear with the app. • Data from adsb.fi, adsb.lol (ODbL license) and the Open Glider Network, for personal, non-commercial use. LIMITS • Community traffic from the internet: accuracy, completeness and continuity are not guaranteed. • An aircraft can be missing: out of receiver range, without a transponder, with ADS-B switched off, or hidden by your own filters. Low-flying helicopters are the hardest to hear. • ADS-B altitudes are pressure altitudes referenced to 1013.25 hPa, those of flight levels, not QNH-corrected altitudes. • Never use it to navigate, separate or avoid traffic, and never in IMC. • Your duty to “see and avoid” remains yours alone: stay vigilant at all times. Vigilance in flight remains the sole responsibility of the pilot in command. • The disclaimer is shown at every launch, and must be accepted every time.Read more
