About

Winchester simulates a 1990s hard disk — its platters, its arm, its file system — and lets you hear it work. Not a recording on a loop: every seek you hear is computed from where the head was and where the next cluster is. WHAT YOU HEAR • The seek: the arm jumping from one cylinder to the next, its weight and colour set by the distance travelled • The return to the edge: the sharp clack of the head going back to rewrite the FAT, once per file • The hum: the spindle, continuous, under everything else Nothing is sampled. The mechanics are simulated sector by sector, with rotational latency and track-to-track settle, and the audio engine renders what that motion would sound like. WATCH THE VOLUME AS IT MOVES A cluster map fills the screen, one block for a few dozen clusters. Blocks light amber when read, turquoise when written, and change colour at the instant the write is heard. Darker means a file stored in one piece; lighter means one in fragments. The grey gaps between files are what will fragment the next ones. REAL DEFRAGMENTERS The tools are modelled on the real ones and do not behave alike: full optimisation that walks the whole volume, cheap fragment merging that only touches what is broken, frontier compaction. Run two of them on the same volume and compare the reports — bytes moved, files unfragmented, free-space holes, and how long it took. DISKS WITH A HISTORY Period disks come with their life already lived: a FAT16 volume formatted in 1993, a FAT32 one from 1999, filled the way a person actually filled them, install after install, day after day. Or build your own — geometry, file system, cluster size, what was installed, what was used for — and listen to it age. AN HOUR, OR SEVEN A pass takes as long as it takes. It keeps playing with the screen locked, and the pass banner tells you where it is when you come back. Requires iOS 17 or later. Headphones strongly recommended: a built-in speaker erases the low end of the rotation and most of the arm's transients.Read more
