Random Things: Stuff You Own

How many things do you own? Most people have no idea. Random Things answers it. Photograph something — a jacket, a charger, a pair of boots. The background dissolves away, the object is recognised and named, and it's filed into a category. No forms, no typing, no barcode hunting. Just point the camera at a thing. Then the number goes up. THE COUNT IS THE POINT Other apps in this category help you prove what you own to an insurer. Receipts, serial numbers, replacement values, claims. It's admin, and nobody opens it twice. Random Things is a mirror instead. The first thing on screen is how many things you own, broken down by what they are — how much of it is electronics, how much is clothes, how much arrived just this month. Watching that number climb is a different experience from filling in a spreadsheet. PHOTOGRAPH, DON'T TYPE Cataloguing possessions is tedious, so the app does the tedious part. Apple's Vision framework lifts the subject out of your photo and suggests a name and a category. Correct it if it's wrong — it's a starting point, not a decision. Everything happens on your iPhone. Your photographs are never uploaded for processing. YOUR THINGS, AS THINGS Cut-out photographs on a plain ground, not rows of grey text. You should recognise your own belongings at a glance, because they're the actual objects, not a description of them. COLLECTIONS Group things that belong together — a shelf, a bag, a room, a desk. Drop items onto a board and drag, pinch and rotate them until it looks like the real place. Useful for knowing what's in the carry-on before you close it. WORTH, IF YOU WANT IT Each item can carry a price. Once enough of them do, Random Things shows you roughly what everything adds up to. It never asks, and the count works perfectly well without it. Those cut-out photographs are sourced from Wikimedia Commons and used under their respective Creative Commons licences, with backgrounds removed on-device. Every other picture in the app is one you take yourself. Product names and trademarks shown belong to their respective owners and are used only to identify ordinary objects a person might own.
