Talk face to face, and be understood as you go. Put the phone between you, press Start, and just talk. The app works out who is speaking and in which language, so nobody has to reach over and flip a switch. Each side reads the other in its own column while the translation is spoken aloud. 24 languages, 271 pairs Choose your language under "I speak" and the other person's under "They speak". Any two of these can be paired: Arabic, Bangla (Bengali), Chinese, Dutch, English, Filipino, French, German, Hebrew, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Persian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish, Urdu and Vietnamese. The only exceptions are Indonesian with Malay, Hindi with Urdu, and Arabic, Urdu and Persian with one another. Cantonese pairs with Mandarin. Translations are spoken aloud and shown as subtitles, except in two cases that are subtitles only: translating into Bangla, and Mandarin into Cantonese. Someone speaking Bangla or Cantonese is still translated aloud into the other language. The app itself is available in all 24 languages, with Chinese in Simplified and Traditional characters. It follows your iPhone's language, or you can pick one in Settings. No sign-up. Your first 5 minutes are free. Open the app and press Start: there is no account to create and nothing to set up. When the free minutes run out, buy 1, 5 or 10 hours of interpreting time in the app. Every language is included. · Direction is detected automatically. For pairs that share an alphabet you can also pin it by hand · Subtitles and speech together, side by side, so the conversation keeps its rhythm · The translation is spoken in a voice close to the speaker's own, so each person keeps their voice. Turn it off in Settings · Route the speech to the earpiece and listen privately, without filling the room · Transcripts are kept on the device by day, readable and exportable at any time How time is counted · With spoken translation, a minute of conversation uses a minute · Subtitles only (voice off) uses 20 seconds per minute, so your time lasts three times as long · Time counts while connected, and each start uses the first minute · After 5 minutes with nobody speaking, it stops by itself so no time is wasted · Your time is tied to your iCloud Keychain, so it survives a reinstall and moves to a new iPhone on the same Apple Account Already have an Alibaba Cloud account? In that mode Chinese ⇄ English is free, and one purchase, All languages, unlocks every other pair for good. Privacy Your speech goes straight from your phone to the translation provider, Alibaba Cloud Model Studio, and never passes through our servers. Our server keeps a random account ID, the key your iPhone uses to prove it is running the genuine app, your purchases and the time you have used: no name, email or phone number. We collect no analytics.
