About

How wide is the Moon? You may not know the number, but you are sure it is more than 1,000 kilometres and less than 10,000. Say so, and see how close you were. In Range Finder you look through a scope. Everything in your sight is your range: set its lower and upper bounds, as tight as you dare. If the answer is in your sight, even on a bound, you score, and a tighter sight scores more. If it stays out of sight, you score nothing. The game is knowing how much you know. FIVE QUESTIONS A DAY Every day brings five questions, easiest first, and they are the same five for everyone. Nudge the lower and upper bounds up or down with − and +, hold to go faster, or drag the whole view along the scale. Know it exactly? Tap Type it exactly and type the number: exactly right scores 500, the most a question pays, and anything else scores nothing. Lock in, and a flag rises at the true value. The result shows the working behind every point. HOW SCORING WORKS Each question has a reference width: how wide a range the game reckons someone who knows the subject would need to capture the answer 8 times in 10. Match it and you score 100. Halve it and you score 200, up to 500. For answers that run across powers of ten, such as areas, populations, masses and sizes in space, width is measured as a ratio rather than a difference, and the line under the scope always shows what your sight is worth. Out of sight scores 0. The full rules are one tap away while you play. THEN ORDER UP After the five questions, put five things in order: shortest to longest, earliest to latest. Each one scores 30, minus 15 for every place it is out, never below zero. All five right adds 75. BEAT PAR Every daily round has a par. On the questions, par is what a simulated informed guesser scores on average. On ORDER UP, par is 90, what three cards in exactly the right place are worth. Beat par and the day is yours. Your streak counts each day you set all five ranges on that day's daily, win or lose. PASS THE PHONE Two to eight players on one phone. Everyone sets a range on the same question in turn, behind a hand-over screen, then the whole table sees one reveal with every range on it. Running totals after each question, and a winner (or a tie) at the end. HOW SURE WERE YOU? The width of a range is a claim about how sure you are. Stats plots those claims against how often you were right, so you can see whether you overclaim or undersell. You also get your rounds against par and a calendar of the month. NINE CATEGORIES Nearly 800 questions across Geography, Peaks & rivers, Animals, Astronomy, History, Sport, Screen & song, Structures and Everyday things. Tap a question on a round's result to see its source and whether that answer has been checked against it. AND ALSO Play any past daily from the archive. Share a result that gives no answers away. Turn on an optional daily reminder, set to the time you choose. NOTHING COLLECTED No account, no ads, no purchases and no analytics. The app works offline and never connects to the internet itself. Your history stays on your phone. A Question Assembly game.Read more
