Ship's Purse Guest

Day four of the charter, the bookkeeper asks for a top-up, and you would like to see where the money went. Ship's Purse Guest shows you the charter kitty kept in Rainbow's End Ship's Purse: every payment in, every expense, the receipts, and where you stand. It is the free crew app for Ship's Purse. The bookkeeper switches on sharing and gives you an eight-character code. Type it and you see the same purse they keep. The purse is sealed with a key made from the code. Nobody without the code can read it, including us. The method comes from Charles Parette, who kept charter kitties by hand and in spreadsheets for years. We built it aboard our ketch Rainbow, for the crew who pay into the purse. HOW IT WORKS 1. Get the code from the bookkeeper. It is on the Share screen of Ship's Purse. 2. Type it and tap Open the purse. 3. Tap your name to see your own figures. YOUR FIGURES • Share due: everything asked of you, all rounds, at your share. • Paid in, and what you paid for the boat yourself that has not been paid back. • What you still owe on the rounds so far. • If the purse settled now: what it hands you, or what you hand it. THE PURSE • What the purse holds, in cash and in the float, and what it has spent. • The ledger, with struck lines crossed out and their reasons. • Receipt photos, fetched when you tap. • The last count of the cash. SETTLEMENT One line per person, yours first. Everyone settles with the purse, never with another guest. Each line is marked paid as the bookkeeper records it. KEEPING UP Your phone looks for changes when you open the purse, when you come back to the app, and every minute while it is open, and the purse says when it last checked. The app opens on the purse you joined last. Purses you have opened stay on your phone with their last copy, so they open with no signal and say how old the copy is. When sharing ends, the last copy stays readable. No account and no iCloud sign-in. No permissions asked. On iPhone and iPad. The sample purse, a week in the Exumas with seven people, opens without a code. WHAT IT WON'T DO • Change the purse. Only the bookkeeper enters payments and expenses. • Move money. You pay the bookkeeper in cash or your own apps. • Open a purse without its code. Ship's Purse Guest needs a purse kept in Rainbow's End Ship's Purse, sold separately on the App Store.
