Rainbow's End Monitor

Ashore for dinner, and the wind is building. Rainbow’s End Monitor shows you the boat’s anchor watch and sounds on your phone if she drags. It is the free crew app for Rainbow’s End Anchoring. The owner switches on Share with crew and gives you an eight-character code. Enter it and you see what the boat sees. If her reports stop, your phone treats the silence as an alarm, so a dead link never looks like a boat riding safely. We built it aboard our ketch Rainbow, for the crew who go ashore. HOW IT WORKS 1. Get the code from the boat. It is on her Watch tab. 2. Enter it and tap Look for the watch. 3. Allow notifications so alarms reach you with the app closed. 4. To walk back to her, tap Find the boat. THE WATCH • The fence around her anchor, drawn from her own anchoring plan. • Where she lies, drawn as a hull to her length, and the trail of where she has swung. • The red sector where the owner has set that she should not swing. • The boat phone’s battery. • North up, or heads up with her bow at the top. Apple satellite imagery under the plot, if you switch the map on. • Open the app and it shows the boat you were watching, her last report and how old it is, then reads her again. • A night view, red on black, so a phone woken on a dark dock costs no one their night vision. THE ALARMS • A drag, a swing or a quiet GPS reaches your phone as a notification within seconds, even with the app closed. This needs the phone signed into iCloud. Keep it off silent. • If her reports stop, the screen says the link is stale after 90 seconds and sounds after 3 minutes. With the app closed, a “No word from the boat” notice comes after 15 minutes. Allow Critical Alerts and that notice sounds through the silent switch and Do Not Disturb. FIND THE BOAT One arrow points at her, with the bearing and distance. Her name, hull color and photo come with the code, so you can tell her from the boat next door. With no signal, the arrow points at where she was last reported. ON YOUR WRIST The Apple Watch app shows her word, her fence and the arrow back to her, and reads the boat itself once your iPhone hands her over, so it works with the phone left behind. The complication puts her last word on your watch face, with how long ago she said it. WHAT CREW CAN’T DO Disarm the watch, silence the alarm aboard, or move the fence. Silence here quiets your phone only. PRIVACY The boat’s record is encrypted with a key made from the code. Nobody without the code can read it, including us. No account, no server of ours, no analytics. Your position is used on your phone for the arrow and the map, and the boat never learns where you are.
