About
MapCar shows the speed limit of the road you are on and says so out loud before you go over it. Use it on an iPhone in a cradle, or right on your car's screen through CarPlay. WHAT YOU SEE WHILE DRIVING • A speed limit sign drawn like the real one • A big speedometer that changes colour once you are over • A map that follows the car and turns with your heading • The road you are on, plus lights, signs, petrol stations, chargers ahead • Jams reported by other cars on MapCar • Trip distance, time, average and top speed Lock the phone or switch apps mid-trip: your speed and next sign stay on the lock screen, Dynamic Island and Apple Watch. ON THE CAR SCREEN (CARPLAY) Plug the iPhone into a CarPlay car and the map, limit sign, speedometer and directions appear on the car's screen, warnings spoken through its speakers. No CarPlay? Everything still runs on the iPhone. WHERE THE LIMITS COME FROM Where data exists, the app reads the exact limit for that stretch. Otherwise it works one out from the road type and your vehicle (car, truck, bus, truck with trailer) per Vietnam's official speed table; an estimate always carries a ~ sign. Wrong? Correct it on screen and the app remembers. Warnings are spoken by a recorded voice or as a beep, with a mute button. A margin of a few km/h keeps GPS error from setting them off; adjust it in Settings. DIRECTIONS Search by typing (no accents needed) or by voice. Pick a result to see the route, distance and arrival time; tap Start and each turn is spoken, the route is redone when you go another way, and the app remembers roads you prefer. WORKS WITHOUT SIGNAL Download the map, places and routing data for the whole country once over Wi-Fi. Then you still see roads, find places and get directions in tunnels, in the mountains or without data. COMMUNITY MAP See a speed sign, a speed camera or a jam? One tap reports it to other drivers. A sign appears only once three people have reported it, so nobody can plant one. Opt out in Settings. THE CAMERA WATCHING THE ROAD • Following distance: the rear camera watches the car in front and warns when you are too close. Setup asks only the phone's height above the road. • Dashcam: records in short clips, dropping the oldest unlocked one when the quota is full. One tap takes a photo or locks the clip where something just happened; clips carry time and place. TYRE PRESSURE With Bluetooth TPMS valve sensors, all four pressures show on the driving screen and the app speaks up when one is low. REST REMINDER AFTER 4 HOURS The app counts the time the car is actually moving and reminds you to rest after 4 hours; a red light is not a break, a 15-minute stop resets the clock. FREE Everything above is free and stays free. The Pro plan (yearly or Lifetime) is for those who want more about their car: speed, RPM, coolant temperature and fault codes read through an OBD adapter under the steering wheel (Bluetooth LE or Wi-Fi only), plus three alternative looks for the driving screen. 30-day trial, no card, no automatic charge. New iPhone? Tap "Restore Purchases". DATA FOR VIETNAM ONLY MapCar's map, limits, places and directions cover Vietnam only. Outside Vietnam the app shows a basic map and says so on screen. WORTH KNOWING FIRST • MapCar is not a certified speed measuring device and does not replace real signs; the sign on the road is the final word. • A limit with a ~ sign is an estimate and may be off either way. • The following distance warning needs a camera that sees the road; not at night or in heavy rain. A reminder, not a brake. • Speed warnings need the map on screen (iPhone or CarPlay), so the app keeps the screen on and pauses them while the phone is locked or another app is in front. The dashcam records only while the app is open. • Road data comes from OpenStreetMap, kept up by volunteers. No account, no sign-in.
