About
Hinokoto Station Data lets you look up, compare, and rank train stations across Japan by daily ridership. It covers 9,045 stations, 594 lines, and 176 operators, with figures for fiscal years 2011 to 2024 from open data published by Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT). Search stations Find a station by its name, line, prefecture, or city, in English or Japanese. Each station page shows: - Latest daily ridership, year-over-year change, and long-term change since 2011 - Nationwide and prefecture rank, each with a deviation score that shows where the station sits relative to others - Station tier: Terminal, Major, General, or Small - A year-by-year ridership chart - Japanese reading, location, a locator map, and the lines serving the station - Nearby stations with distance, direction, and a map (you can choose how many to show) Compare two stations Put two stations side by side to compare ridership, rank, and change over time, with a chart covering the last five years. You can also compare the lines serving each station and the stations around them. Rankings Rank stations by latest ridership, year-over-year change, or long-term change. View the whole country or narrow the list to a prefecture, line, or operator, and switch between highest and lowest first. Explore lines Search for a line to see its profile, including estimated length, number of stations, railway type, and operator, along with a ridership ranking of its stations and a route map you can zoom and pan. Pick two lines to compare their profiles. Favorites Tap the star to save stations you check often, then open them from your favorites list. About the data The app is built on MLIT's National Land Numerical Information: railway data (N02), station ridership data (S12), and administrative area data (N03). Hinokoto Studio aggregates the figures by station and calculates metrics such as change rates and station tiers. English station names are based on Wikidata and official railway operator information. The data is bundled with the app, so you can browse it without an internet connection. Collection methods and coverage vary by operator and fiscal year, so figures are not always directly comparable, and the data may contain gaps or errors. Rankings and station tiers are relative values based on specific metrics. For important decisions, please also check the latest National Land Numerical Information or the railway operator's own figures.
