About
ScreenSunset Companion is the child-device app for ScreenSunset. A parent installs it on their child's iPad or iPhone, pairs it with the family's ScreenSunset dashboard, and from then on that device follows the rules the parent chose. It is a companion app: on its own it does nothing, and it cannot be set up or changed by the child. HOW IT WORKS 1. A parent creates a family on the ScreenSunset dashboard and adds a child. 2. On the child's iPad or iPhone this app shows a QR code and a short pairing code. The parent scans it, or types it into the dashboard. 3. The parent allows Screen Time (Apple's Family Controls) and picks which apps and websites each rule covers. 4. From then on the parent changes the rules from their own phone or computer, and this app applies them. WHAT A PARENT CAN CONTROL - Daily time limits per app or app category - A total daily screen-time budget for the device - Blocked apps and blocked websites - Bedtime: apps pause between the hours you choose - School hours, when limits can be paused - Always-allowed apps, which never count against a limit - Pause the internet, or lock the device, from the dashboard - Safe Search enforced on Google, YouTube and Bing ASK FOR MORE TIME When an app is paused, the block screen offers "Ask for more time". The request appears on the parent's dashboard; if they approve it, the extra minutes arrive on the child's device within seconds. THE WEBSITE FILTER STAYS ON THE DEVICE ScreenSunset installs a local VPN profile. It is a DNS-only filter that runs entirely on this device: it looks at website names to decide whether a site is allowed, and never proxies, records or forwards browsing traffic. No traffic is sent to us or to any third party. Name lookups go to Cloudflare's public encrypted DNS resolver. WHAT IS COLLECTED AND WHERE IT GOES The app reports coarse app-usage totals, the website domains visited, and the device's location to the family's own ScreenSunset account, so the parent can see them in their dashboard. That is the entire purpose of the app. Nothing is sold or shared, there is no advertising and there are no third-party analytics or advertising SDKs. The child never creates an account: the parent's account owns the device. GOOD TO KNOW - Runs on iPad and iPhone, with on-screen wording that matches the device it is on. - The child cannot change or remove the rules from this app. Sensitive actions ask for the parent's PIN. - Apple gives no app the power to prevent its own deletion. This app shows the parent how to block that with a Screen Time restriction while the device is in their hands. - Location reporting can be switched off by the parent at any time from the dashboard. - On iOS 15, Apple only grants app-limit authorization to a Family Sharing child account, so sign the child's device in with a child Apple ID in your Family Sharing group (or use iOS 16 or later). Website filtering, location and reports work on iOS 15 either way. - Free. No in-app purchases, no advertising.
