About
Dictionary Genie tells you what a word means, how it really sounds, how to use it, and how to say it in another language. Works completely offline: the whole dictionary is built in, so it works on a plane, in a classroom, or anywhere your signal drops. PRONUNCIATION YOU CAN ACTUALLY READ Everyday words show the IPA, syllable breaks, a familiar respelling (ad-VEN-ture), and a sound-first spelling for the tricky ones, with US and UK given separately where the dictionary has both. 75,811 headwords carry a pronunciation, among them 1,998 of the 2,000 commonest English words, and nearly all of those carry the readable respelling too. Tap to hear it, or slow it down. Rare words and most multiword phrases show their definition without a pronunciation block. DEFINITIONS, EXAMPLES, AND THESAURUS, CONNECTED 223,768 headwords and 437,666 senses, grouped by part of speech with clear usage labels, word forms, and real examples. Synonyms, antonyms, and related words are attached to the sense they belong to, so "bright" the color and "bright" the mind never get mixed up. Compare two to four synonyms side by side to choose the right one. Depth follows how common a word is: of the 10,000 most frequent words, 88% carry examples and 84% carry thesaurus links, while the rarest words and many phrase entries, about a third of the dictionary, are a definition on their own. TRANSLATE WORDS IN CONTEXT Word translations in 22 languages, including Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Arabic, Hindi, and Latin, with gender and transliteration where they matter. 265,723 human-written bilingual sentences show the word at work in both languages. Like the examples, translations are richest on common and mid-frequency words. Translate a whole sentence with Apple's on-device Translation, clearly marked "On device" so you always know where the work happens. A NEW WORD EVERY DAY, AND A PHRASE IN FIVE LANGUAGES Word of the Day arrives with pronunciation, meaning, and a short note on where it comes from. Phrase of the Day comes in Latin, Spanish, French, Italian, or German, chosen in Settings: 366 sayings in each language, a full year without a repeat. Every one carries a respelling you can say aloud, literal and idiomatic translations, the cultural context, and a modern example of it in use. Attributions say plainly when a saying is traditional or of unknown origin rather than documented. Browse the archive, set a gentle reminder with quiet hours, and keep a streak that never scolds you. SAVE WORDS AND TRANSLATIONS Favorites, a history you can pause or clear, vocabulary lists, and notes. Star a translation to keep it and find past ones in history. Share any word as text, a link, or a picture card. Saved words appear in Spotlight, and the "Look up a word" Shortcut opens an entry straight from Siri. WIDGETS Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets show today's word, today's phrase, or a saved word to review. TAP ANY WORD Every word in every definition and example is a link to its own entry. MADE FOR EVERYONE VoiceOver, Dynamic Type through the largest accessibility sizes, Reduce Motion, and increased contrast. PRIVATE BY DESIGN No account. No sign-in. No ads. No tracking. No analytics. Your searches, translations, and saved words stay on your device.
