About

Read Japanese literature with word help close at hand. Yomu includes 161 works by 21 authors from Aozora Bunko, including Akutagawa, Sōseki, Dazai and Miyazawa. Find a story through illustrated recommendations, author profiles or the searchable library. Selected works include introductions with background on the author and story. These introductions are separate from the original Japanese text. Tap words recognised by the built-in dictionary to see readings and English meanings without leaving the page. Listen to Japanese pronunciation using an available device voice. Furigana is displayed where supplied in the source text, and your reading position is saved for your next visit. SAVE WORDS AS YOU READ Save vocabulary to a list for each story, together with the original sentence. Revisit readings and meanings, hide meanings for a simple self-test, or return to the passage. Remove individual words with Undo, or clear a story’s list when you choose. Saved words stay in Yomu on your device. CHOOSE YOUR NEXT STORY Browse and search by title or author, including romanised names. Sort by length, title, recent reading or estimated vocabulary familiarity. The familiarity estimate uses reading and lookups stored on your device; it is not a comprehension test or a count of words you have learned. Tracking is optional. MAKE READING COMFORTABLE Adjust text size, typeface, contrast, background and furigana display. Choose an English or Japanese interface. Settings explain saved vocabulary, reading positions and familiarity history, with separate controls to clear each. The library, dictionary and saved-word lists work offline. No account is required. There are no ads, subscriptions or in-app purchases. Saved words do not sync with other apps or the website. Texts are sourced from Aozora Bunko and credited to its digitisation volunteers. Bibliographic information is adapted from Aozora Bunko under CC BY 4.0. Dictionary data is from JMdict, © EDRDG, CC BY-SA 4.0. Source and image credits are available in the app. Part of the MOJIN family of Japanese learning apps.Read more
