About
Solander works out what the sun, the moon and the dark will do at your spot — hour by hour, days ahead — and commits to an answer: go tonight, or don't. Drag the wheel along the bottom of the screen and the whole app retunes to that moment. Every screen answers in the same currency: hours of light you can actually use. SIX TABS, ONE QUESTION SKY — what the light is doing now, and how long you have left of it. The day's whole run of light — blue hour, sunrise, golden hour, sunset, true dark — measured to the minute. ASTRO — one number: how much genuinely dark, moonless, cloud-free sky tonight gives you. The dial shows dark, moon and cloud as separate bands, so you can see which one is costing you the night. The week beside it picks the best of the next five nights. MAP — the sun's and the moon's paths for the day, drawn around your pin. Scrub back through the afternoon and the sight lines swing round with you. LIVE — hold the phone up and the paths land on whatever you're pointing at, for whatever time you've scrubbed to. Choose a composition in the afternoon, hours before the stars arrive. SHOOTS — save a shoot and it becomes a run sheet for the night. Group shoots into trips. Home Screen widgets carry the run of light, tonight's arc and the week; a Live Activity counts you into the dark. KIT — put your camera and lenses in the bag and the tools answer for them: star exposure before trailing, gap-free star-trail stacking, ND filter exposure, depth of field, time-lapse frames and storage. IT WILL TELL YOU NOT TO BOTHER A flat "not tonight" is worth more than an optimistic maybe. When the moon is up until three and the cloud sits at sixty percent, Solander says so — and shows exactly what it judged on. THE MATHS NEVER LEAVES THE PHONE The astronomy is computed on your iPhone. No account, no sign-in, no Mirentha server. Your location is used on the device and sent only to Apple Weather for the forecast; the aurora watch reads NOAA's public feed without sending your position at all. PRICE Seven days free, then £2.99 a month or £19.99 a year, through your Apple Account. The subscription renews automatically until you cancel in your App Store settings, at least 24 hours before the period ends. The Live view needs a physical iPhone camera. Weather data provided by Apple Weather.Read more
