About

In the 17th century, the Sonian Forest south of Brussels had its own school of painters: Lodewijk de Vadder (1605–1655), Jacques d'Arthois (1613–1686), Lucas Achtschellinck (1626–1699) and Ignatius van der Stock (1636–1668). This application unites their four catalogues raisonnés — 2,484 works: paintings, drawings, prints and tapestries, documented by attribution, provenance, public auctions, exhibitions, bibliography and iconography. Everything works offline. The four corpora and their visualisations are embedded in the app: in a museum basement or an auction room without signal, the catalogues answer. BROWSE AND SEARCH • Each catalogue in its curated order, and the school as a whole • Free-text search across titles, motifs, media, possessors and more • Filters by painter and by category • Every term of a work links to the related works that share it • Swipe left and right through a work's neighbours, following your search RECOGNISE A WORK • Photograph a painting — or pick a photo — and the app finds it across the four catalogues, entirely on the device • Disputed attributions are surfaced: a work catalogued by two painters is shown once, under both names KEEP YOUR SELECTION • Star any work; your saved list stays on your device The catalogues raisonnés are maintained by their author; the companion website is sonianforestpainters.net.Read more

Redesigned to match the sonianforestpainters.net websites: the school's portal, each painter's home page, the catalogue with its search filters, and the full record of every work, exactly as published online. The catalogues are updated automatically from the websites whenever the app opens, and remain available offline. Photographs are compared by the website's recognition engine for certain identifications.
