About
Cast Iron ID is a decoding toolkit for antique American cast iron. The bottom of a skillet carries more information than a logo: a pattern number, a size number, a heat ring, a gate mark, the finish of the cooking surface. This app reads all of it, and only one of its seven tools needs a photo or a signal. SEVEN WAYS TO IDENTIFY - Decode a number. Type the number cast on the bottom and get the maker, the size and the typical diameter. 704 is a Griswold No. 8. 1058 is a Wagner Ware No. 8. 8SK is a Lodge. 35 pattern and catalog numbers, offline. - Measure the pan. Enter the rim diameter in inches or centimeters and get the size number, with the tolerance collectors use. A pan that comes in an eighth of an inch small is flagged, because shrinkage is the classic sign of a recast. - Date an unmarked pan. Tick the casting features you can see: heat ring, gate mark, raised or incised letters, machined or rough surface. The app intersects their date windows and tells you when two features cannot both be true. - Read the markings. The offline path built for the middle of a flea market. Brand text narrows the maker, casting features and size number rank 88 logo variants, each with its own date window. - Reproduction check. Ten recast tells weighted by how damning they are, plus maker-specific fake flags for Griswold, Wagner, Wapak and others. Get a plain verdict before you hand over cash. - Restore or leave it. Enter the condition, get an honest answer: cook on it, cook with care, or display only, and what pitting, warp, heat damage or a crack does to value. Safe stripping and seasoning guidance, no shortcuts that ruin a pan. - Scan the bottom. Point the camera at the pan and get a maker, a date range and a live market price range in seconds. Three scans free. THE MAKER GUIDE 15 American foundries, 88 dated logo variants, 12 casting features, 35 pattern numbers. Griswold, Wagner, Erie, Wapak, BSR, Lodge, Favorite, Vollrath and more, every variant with its own date window. Real sold-listing price comps, not a decade-old price guide. MY SHELF Every piece you keep goes on a shelf that speaks collector: pitting, sulfur pit, warp, crack, machined surface. Price paid against value today, the whole collection's worth at a glance, and a care log that records each lye bath, electrolysis run and seasoning round. A ready-to-paste sell listing when you let one go. Stored on your device, never in the cloud.
