Charli: Language Learning

Charli is a voice language teacher for people who already speak some of a language and have stopped being corrected. Once people understand you, they stop correcting you. Charli corrects what you actually said, names the pattern behind each mistake in your native language, and keeps a record of every structure you command and every one you do not. WHO IT IS FOR Anyone who can already speak some Spanish, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, German, French, or English. A few sentences is enough to start. Charli is not a place to start from zero. Preparing for a speaking exam? The DELE, HSK, IELTS, and TOEFL speaking sections score the structures you produce out loud, which is exactly what Charli corrects and tracks. It does not teach the exam format. IN A SESSION Pick a language, pick Grammar or Scenarios, pick 5, 10, or 30 minutes, and talk about anything. Charli listens to what you said, not a cleaned-up version of it, and corrects you in the moment with a short explanation in your language. When it is confident about the pattern, the correction carries the grammar concept's name. Reaching for a word you do not have? Charli hands it to you and the conversation keeps moving. Rather stop on a correction than push through? The conversation waits. Replay it, highlight the words that surprised you, say "Hey Charli" to talk it over in your own language, then pick the conversation back up. AFTER YOU STOP TALKING Every session ends with a reflection: the sentence you actually said, mistakes preserved rather than cleaned up, next to the corrected form, with the concept underneath. Charli classifies each mistake on four dimensions: word form, tense, vocabulary choice, and sentence grammar. Open a concept into a short spoken lesson in your native language, hear wrong-versus-right examples in the language you are learning, then produce the form yourself, out loud. After grammar sessions there is a quick check: one sentence, one part highlighted, what is this pattern called? Get it right and that concept's star lights. Slip on it later and the star dims until you win it back. THE FLUENCY MAP Charli tracks the language's structures by name (gender agreement, the imperfect subjunctive, clitic placement, and so on down the list). Each one reads Commanded, Emerging, Needs repair, or Not yet tested. Tap one and your own sentences are the evidence. Structures you have never attempted sit there by name, holding the number down. No credit for showing up. No streaks. The number moves when your speech moves. Your history keeps every reflection, so you can see which mistakes stop appearing. You can also ignore all of this and just talk. It is there for the day you want to know what is holding you back.
