About
Wordhoard is a dictionary built for readers. Look a word up. It is saved as a flashcard, then reviewed until you know it. FOUR WAYS TO LOOK A WORD UP • Type it • Tap it in Reading Mode — paste a passage, or photograph a page • Share it from Apple Books, Safari, or any app with a share sheet • Double-click it in your browser, with the Wordhoard extension However the word arrives, it is saved with its context. WHEN THE DEFINITION DOES NOT HELP Some definitions are harder than the word they define. Wordhoard can rewrite one in plain English, in the sense your book is using. Ten rewrites are free. IF YOU HAVE AN E-READER, START THERE Kindle, Kobo and PocketBook have been quietly saving every word you looked up, sometimes for years. Import that file and it all arrives as flashcards, filed under the books they came from. Kindle keeps the sentence too. THE WORDS FROM A BOOK Name a book from Project Gutenberg's 79,000 free classics. Wordhoard reads the actual text and finds the words worth learning, with the sentence each one appears in. It skips character names and ordinary literary English, and learns which words you already know as you use it. REVIEW THAT KNOWS WHAT YOU KNOW Cards are scheduled with FSRS, the spaced repetition algorithm serious flashcard users have moved to. Words you know go quiet for months. Words you keep losing come back tomorrow. You schedule nothing. Every word shows how rare it is, so you can tell what is worth the effort, and you choose how hard a review should be instead of taking the same test every time. WRITE YOUR OWN A name, a piece of jargon, a word no dictionary has, or a meaning you would explain differently. Type it and it becomes a card like any other. TWELVE LANGUAGES English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Latin, Japanese, Korean and Chinese. MAKE CARDS FOR SOMEONE ELSE Look a word up and send it. It lands on their phone as a card to learn, with the sentence you give them. A parent and a child is the obvious case; it works the same for a teacher, a tutor, or a partner learning your language. Nobody can reach anybody uninvited. There is no directory, no search and no usernames. The only way to connect is a code the other person types into their own phone, and either of you can end it alone at any time. WHAT IS FREE Unlimited words, cards and reviews. Reading Mode and the page scanner. Your own definitions. Shelves, quizzes and streaks. Sync between your devices. The browser extension. Receiving words from someone else. Ten rewritten definitions to try. No word limit and no trial clock. WHAT THE SUBSCRIPTION ADDS Wordhoard Unlimited covers one person: • Rewritten definitions, as many as you like • Import from Kindle, Kobo and PocketBook • The words from a book • Making cards for someone else Wordhoard Together is the same thing for up to six people, cheaper than three separate subscriptions. Everyone keeps their own library, and you can add or remove people whenever you like. PRIVACY Sign in with Apple asks for no name and no email address. If you never sign in, nothing leaves your phone at all. If you do, your library syncs so another device can read it, and your review history and folders still never leave.
