About
Mise draws a recipe the way it actually works: as a table. Ingredients run down the left. Every other cell is a step, and it brackets exactly the things that go into it. Read left to right and you follow the cooking. Read a cell up and down and you see everything it takes. The point is what a numbered list cannot show you. Two steps side by side with nothing joining them do not depend on each other — so they can be done in either order, or at the same time, or by two people. A list flattens that into one order and then hides it from you. The format is Michael Chu's, from cookingforengineers.com. Mise is a place to keep your own recipes in it. ADDING RECIPES Add from a web page, a PDF, or a photo of a cookbook page. Mise reads the ingredients and steps and works out the table. Everything is read on this device — nothing is uploaded, and there is no account. A recipe read from a scan is a guess until somebody checks it, and Mise says so. The "Needs checking" pile shows exactly what it was unsure about, so you can fix it in a few seconds instead of finding out at the stove. COOKING - Cook mode takes the table one step per screen, in type you can read at arm's length. - Scale a recipe up or down. Amounts are kept as fractions, so half of two-thirds of a cup is a third, not 0.33. - Switch between cups and grams. - A shopping list adds several recipes into one aisle-ordered list, and refuses to combine amounts it cannot honestly add up. KEEPING THEM - Every recipe keeps its earlier versions, and the original page it came from. - Tags, stars, notes, and a log of when you last cooked something. - Search across titles, ingredients and steps, including near-misses for when you cannot remember the spelling. - Allergen and diet labels worked out from the ingredients. YOUR LIBRARY IS A FILE The whole library is one file you can copy off the device, back up, or open on a Mac. There is no sync service, no account, and no subscription, because there is nothing in the middle to run. Mise collects nothing about you. It has no analytics, no advertising, and no network connections other than fetching a recipe page you asked it to fetch.Read more
