About

hako is the companion app for the hako keychain: a wireless SD card reader small enough to live on your keys. It takes a full-size SD card — the one your camera already writes, with no adapter in the middle. IT NEEDS THE KEYCHAIN. This app does nothing on its own. Without hardware to tap there is nothing to read, and it will sit on the tap screen waiting. HOW IT WORKS Put the card in the keychain. Hold your iPhone against it. The NFC tag wakes the keychain, your iPhone joins its own private network, and this app opens on the photos — about a second from touch to browsable thumbnails. Choose the frames you want. They come across at around 2.5 MB/s, so a 5 MB photo takes roughly two seconds. Predictive loading fetches what you are about to open before you ask for it, so scrolling stays ahead of the transfer. Photos land in your photo library. Original file, original filename. No re-encoding and no renaming. Anything the library will not hold — a RAW sibling, a document pulled off the card — goes to the Files app, under On My iPhone. WHAT IS IN IT - Thumbnails of everything on the card, and tap-to-choose for saving a batch in one go. - A file browser, for when you want names, sizes and dates instead of pictures. RAW files get previews too. - Firmware updates for the keychain, checked and installed from here. - Light and dark, both drawn in full: true black on OLED, warm off-white in daylight. NO CLOUD, NO ACCOUNT, NO INTERNET Your iPhone talks to the keychain directly. Nothing is uploaded, nothing is proxied, and no server ever sees the photos — a transfer works on a mountain, on a plane, or anywhere else with no signal at all. There is no sign-in, so there is no account to delete. hako does not know your name, your email address, or where you are. It collects nothing and shares nothing, and it never asks for your location. USB-C IS THE WIRED FALLBACK The same port that charges the keychain also makes it an ordinary card reader. Plug it into a computer and the card mounts like any other, with no app and no drivers. WHAT YOU NEED - A hako keychain. - An iPhone with NFC, running iOS 16 or later. - Permission to join the keychain's Wi-Fi network and to reach it over the local network. iOS asks for both the first time you tap, and a transfer cannot happen without them.
