About

Most alarms ask you to make a decision at the exact moment you are least able to make one. First Step doesn't. It rings until you have actually done something, and then it stops. Choose a morning mission. Push-ups, squats, handstand practice, yoga or a walk. Journalling, or ten pages of a book. Meditation, prayer, or a passage of scripture. Tap Stop and it quiets for ninety seconds, then comes back. The alarm keeps going until the mission is done. SUBSCRIPTION REQUIRED First Step is a subscription. Every feature described here, including the alarm itself, requires an active subscription after a one-week free trial: £5.99 a month or £39.99 a year (prices vary by region). There is no free tier. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase, the subscription renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period, and you can manage or cancel it in your Apple Account settings. VERIFIED, NOT TRUSTED Movement missions use the camera to watch for real movement, and the countdown only runs while you are actually moving. Step missions read your live step count. Everything else begins with a photo of the thing you are about to do. Nothing you photograph ever leaves your phone. WATCH IT CLIMB Afterwards, log your reps or your time next to what you managed yesterday. Meditation, journalling and reading record their own minutes, so a longer sit shows up the moment it happens. Streaks respect your schedule and forgive a single miss; your level counts every morning won and never resets. Ranks land at 7, 30 and 66 mornings. STACK THE NEXT HABIT After three mornings in a row, First Step offers a second mission the moment you finish the first. Say yes once and it is waiting every morning after. Always optional, and it never brings the alarm back. BUILT ON ACTUAL RESEARCH The twenty-one day habit rule was invented by a plastic surgeon in 1960 and has no evidence behind it. The real figure, from a University College London study that tracked people forming genuine habits, averages sixty-six days and ranges from eighteen to two hundred and fifty-four. First Step is designed around that range rather than a number somebody made up. No adverts. No account. Nothing uploaded.
