About

OpenHikes is a hiking app with no account to make and no server holding your hikes. They live on your phone. They follow you between your own devices through your own iCloud, and the only thing that ever goes anywhere else is a hike you decide to publish. RECORD YOUR HIKE Tap record and put the phone in your pocket. OpenHikes keeps the track with the screen off and fuses the barometer into the elevation so the climb is the climb. Pause for lunch and it knows: moving average and overall average sit side by side. Start, pause, resume, stop or check a recording from Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight or Control Center, without opening the app. BRING THE GPX YOU ALREADY HAVE A .gpx from anywhere — Files, AirDrop, a share sheet, a link — opens straight into the app, with its metadata, its statistics and a scrubbable elevation profile. Share a hike back out and you get GPX. PHOTOS WHERE YOU TOOK THEM Pictures from the walk are pinned to the point on the trail where they were taken, shown as a gallery strip and as pins on the map. Shots you took with the system camera while recording are found afterwards and matched to the track's own timestamps. Share only a few photos rather than the whole library. TRAILS OTHER PEOPLE HAVE HIKED ON Pan the map and ask, or type a name. Opening a hike gives you the same statistics your own hikes get. Save it, start hiking! Beside them are the waymarked routes OpenStreetMap provides. Publishing is free and is read by the staff before anyone else sees it. Anything published can be reported, blocked, its author blocked. MAPS THAT WORK WITH NO SIGNAL OpenStreetMap is the default and stays free. Areas you browse are kept automatically, so the map you looked at last night is still there in the valley with no bars. ON THE LOCK SCREEN AND THE HOME SCREEN A widget carries trail progress and a climb, descent and high-point line. A Live Activity puts the same figures on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island while you record or follow a trail. And a watchOS app to check out where you are on your trail. THE REST • WeatherKit conditions over the map — the reading now, and the next twelve hours • Live matching to the trail you're on, then a review afterwards where every section the matcher moved is yours to keep, revert or swap • Trail follow with a progress readout, and search across your hikes and nearby places • Finished hikes written to Health as workouts, if you turn it on WHAT STAYS ON YOUR PHONE Photos and saved map tiles never leave the device that made them. There is no OpenHikes login, no analytics profile, no hike uploaded behind your back. Publishing is a button you press. OPENHIKES PRO Everything above is free. Pro adds two commercial map styles — Stadia Outdoors, with hillshading and contour lines, and Thunderforest Outdoors, built to stay readable in sunlight — and lets you download a whole route's Stadia map before you leave. Those maps bill OpenHikes per view: paying for them is what keeps the free OpenStreetMap map free and unburdened. $4.99 per month after a one-week free trial, shareable with your family, cancel any time. TERMS AND PRIVACY Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase. The subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period; manage or cancel it in your Apple Account settings.
