About

Why It Moved keeps a diary of the days your stocks, funds and coins moved far more than they normally do, and asks you one question about each of them: what do you think caused it? Every ticker has its own normal. A 4% day is routine for a young coin and remarkable for a large stock, so the app measures each daily change against that ticker's usual daily move (the standard deviation of its previous 60 daily changes) and lists only the days that went 2, 2.5 or 3 times further — you choose the threshold and whether to look back 6 or 12 months. Next to every move you'll see whether the whole market went the same way. Stocks and funds are compared with the S&P 500 ETF on the same day, coins with Bitcoin, and the move gets a stamp: market-wide day, partly the market, or its own move. Open a move to read the story: the close before and after, a chart of the sessions around it, and the headlines published from the day before to the day after, each linked to the original publisher. The headlines show what was reported — they don't prove the cause. That judgement is yours: tag one or more causes (results, outlook, analyst call, product, deal, regulation, macro, sector news, flows, rumor, no clear news) and add a line in your own words. Over time the journal adds up your notes by cause, up and down, with the average size of those moves, so you can see which kinds of news tend to move the tickers you follow. Export everything as CSV or share a single move as text. What else is in it: Track any stock, ETF, index or major coin by searching its name, and star the ones you care about most. Tap the triangles on a ticker's one-year chart to jump straight to a move. Prices come from public Yahoo Finance data (CoinGecko as a backup for coins) and headlines from Google News; no account or API key is needed. Your tickers, stars and notes are stored only on your iPhone. No ads, no analytics, no sign-in. If you open the app without a connection, it shows a built-in edition of real prices and headlines captured before release, clearly labelled, until the first download succeeds. Why It Moved is not affiliated with Yahoo, Google or CoinGecko. Data may be delayed or incomplete. For information and research only. Not financial or investment advice.Read more
