About

Shatranj Kamil, the great chess of Amir Temur, as it was played in the fourteenth century — now on your phone. A board of 110 squares, eleven files by ten ranks, with two citadels standing off its edges. Twelve kinds of piece instead of six: alongside the familiar rook, knight and pawn you command the giraffe, the camel, the war elephant, the picket, the war engine, the vizier and the counsellor. HOW IT DIFFERS FROM CHESS • Every pawn belongs to a piece and promotes into that piece — and one of them, the pawn of pawns, follows a rule of its own. • A king who reaches the opponent's citadel declares a draw. A losing side always has that road, if it can walk it. • Stalemate is not a draw here: the side that causes it wins. WHAT YOU CAN DO • Play two on one device, pass and move. • Play the engine at three strengths, from a forgiving opponent to one that does not overlook a hanging piece. • Play people online, with a clock, a rating and a result that counts. • Solve 61 tactical puzzles, plus a new one every day. Each shows you what the move wins, and will name the piece to move when you are stuck. • Enter Swiss tournaments: the pairings, the rounds and the table run themselves. • Climb the rating and the leaderboard. AND SOMETHING TO READ The rules are not folklore. The chronicle names who wrote down what, and when — al-Amuli, Murray, the manuscripts — and says plainly where the sources disagree and which reading this game follows. Uzbek, Russian and English. Free. No advertising, no purchases, no tracking.Read more
