Umber Caliper

Umber Caliper is a puzzle about surveying a cooled caldera. Fumaroles breathe under the ground. Sink a shaft into a cell and the instrument tells you how many of them lie in the eight cells around it. From those numbers the vents are worked out — never guessed. NO BOARD EVER NEEDS A GUESS Every one of the 72 surveys is built from a seed and then handed to a solver that uses only the deductions you have: free neighbours, all-remaining-are-vents, the subset rule for overlapping clues, and the running balance of vents left on the map. If the solver stalls, the plot is repaired and checked again. A board that cannot be reasoned to the end is never shipped. THE INSTRUMENTS · Three flasks a survey. A shaft into a vent costs one; the vent opens and stays on the map as a known fact. · The caliper, twice a survey. Lay it against any edge and it answers how many cells separate that edge from the first vent on the line. It is a luxury, never a crutch — the solver is forbidden from using it. · One core for closing the plot, two for closing it without losing a flask, three for closing it without a flask and without the caliper. By Umber Caldera you are mapping 11×14 with 34 vents, scree cells that swallow the reading, and twin vents that always stand shoulder to shoulder. A DAILY CORE SAMPLE One plot a day, the same for everyone, with a streak that a skipped day resets. The last six days can still be closed late — they count in the records, but not in the streak. THE FIELD NOTEBOOK Every closed plot writes a note, and you can start one by hand whenever you like. A note carries the map, the rock, a line in your own words, and one photograph — taken with the camera or chosen from your library. It stays there after a relaunch, and you can replace or remove it.
