WHY COUNTING PUFFS MATTERS A metered-dose inhaler keeps spraying long after the medicine is gone. The propellant still fires, so the puff looks and sounds completely normal even when there is no actual dose left. The only reliable way to know how much medication remains is to count every puff — and counting by hand across two or three caregivers falls apart fast. Someone forgets to mark a dose, two people guess differently, and nobody truly knows whether the inhaler is full, nearly empty, or already spraying nothing.
