Bags and yards, not just yards. Yardage is the easy half. What you actually order is bags, or a truck rounded up to the quarter yard, and most calculators stop before that. This one gives back four numbers at once: cubic feet, cubic yards, cubic metres, and the number of bags in the size you buy. Change the bag size and the count changes with it. The count comes from that bag size and nothing else — 0.60 cubic feet for an eighty pound sack, 0.30 for a forty. Pick the sack you are actually buying and the number on screen is the number you carry to the register. Enter feet inches and fractions the way you measured them. Eight foot three and three eighths is stored as three eighths, shown as three eighths, and never quietly becomes 8.375 on the way through. Sixteenths are kept as whole numbers, so nothing is rounded on the way in. Fractions come back reduced — one half, not nine eighteenths. Order with the overage built in. Set the allowance once and every number carries it. Yards and bags always round up, never down, because a truck that leaves short stops the job for the afternoon. The scale shows what you measured, what the overage added, and which quarter yard it lands on. Six shapes, and steps are formwork. The steps figure is the volume inside the forms, worked from the rise, the run and the number of risers — it is not a stair layout.
