Description
Atlas is the art side of a 2D game, on an iPad and on a Mac. Draw the sprites, build the tilesets, paint the maps, and then write the export your engine actually reads and run it without leaving the app.
ONE APP, THREE EDITORS
The same four panels whatever you are drawing: sources on the left, canvas in the middle, inspector on the right, and the document's own stack along the bottom. Learn it once for a sprite and you already know the tileset and the map.
SPRITES
A sprite is one drawing and everything that belongs to it, not a folder of numbered PNGs beside an animation file that drifts out of date. Each animation owns its own layers and frames, so duplicating a walk cycle gives you a copy you can change freely. Duplicate mirrored turns one direction into eight without redrawing anything. Onion skin, playback and a timeline that is part of the document. Indexed colour against a project palette, so changing a colour once changes every sprite that used it.
TILESETS AND MAPS
A tile is its own little drawing rather than a rectangle cut out of one big sheet. Terrain is painted in ninths, so a coastline finds its own corners as you draw it. A tile can carry artwork larger than the cell it stands on, which is how a tree grows above the ground it is planted in.
EXPORT
An export is a TypeScript function that receives the whole project and hands back files. Write it in the app, in a real code editor with completions and types, run it, and read the log. Your engine's format, not ours: Godot scenes, a JSON atlas, a header file, whatever the game reads.
BRING WHAT YOU HAVE
Import from Aseprite and from Tiled, tilesets and maps together, with terrain, animations, collision shapes and properties coming across rather than being redrawn.
ON YOUR OWN OR WITH OTHERS
Start with a folder on this device: no account, no address to type, nothing else running. It sits in Files, so it can be copied out and backed up like anything else of yours, and it is laid out exactly like a server project, so moving it to a server later needs no conversion.
An Atlas server owns the art in a git repository and hands it to everybody working in it. Two iPads in one map see each other's strokes as they land. Branches, commits and history are driven from the app rather than from a terminal. It is one container that you run, at home or at work, and there is no Atlas service to sign up to.
WHERE IT RUNS
On the iPad the pencil is real: pressure, tilt and palm rejection on a canvas that is the whole screen. On the Mac it is the same app with a pointer, a scroll wheel and the keyboard shortcuts you would expect. One purchase covers both.
The app and the server are open source, and the server is yours to build and run.
