WildWire: AI by SMS

Ask a question by text. Get an answer back. On one bar of signal, or none at all. WildWire is an assistant you reach by text message rather than through an app connection. Send a question and you get a short answer back. Send coordinates or a place name and you get hour-by-hour conditions for that spot. It works over ordinary texting wherever you have a sliver of service, and over Apple's Messages via satellite where you have none. WHY TEXT A web page needs megabytes. A text needs bytes. One bar of signal is usually enough to send a text long after browsing has stopped working, which is why a text still gets through in a valley, on a lake, down a logging road, or anywhere else the map goes quiet. WHAT YOU CAN ASK Weather for a location. Send "45.42,-76.35" or a place name and get an hour-by-hour readout: temperature, chance of rain, wind. Official alerts from the National Weather Service and Environment Canada, included with the forecast. Sunrise, sunset and twilight times for where you are. General questions. Plant and animal identification, knots, gear, cooking, navigation basics, technique. The things you would otherwise look up. SATELLITE COVERAGE Messages via satellite needs iPhone 14 or later and works in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Outside those countries WildWire still works over normal cellular texting. Texts to and from WildWire are ordinary SMS, so your carrier's standard message and data rates may apply to every message you send and receive. WildWire does not charge per message; the subscription covers your line and its monthly allowance. Check your plan if you are unsure what texting costs you. ASK IN THE APP TOO When you do have a connection, the Ask tab is a full conversation, with longer answers and your history in one place. Non-subscribers get three questions a day here at no cost. When the connection drops, the app hands you off to Messages so the same conversation carries on. SHARE YOUR PROGRESS Start a trek and you get a link to share. Text your coordinates as you go and whoever has the link can follow your route on a map. This is progress sharing, not tracking, and not a safety guarantee. WHAT THIS IS NOT WildWire is not an emergency service. It cannot reach rescuers, call for help, or contact anyone for you. It answers texts. If you are in danger, use Emergency SOS via satellite or call 911. It is an informational tool, closer to a field guide than a service, and it will not assess a specific injury or illness. SUBSCRIPTION A subscription activates your line for texting. Your phone number is your account. It is used to run the service and is never shared or sold. Message frequency varies, message and data rates may apply, and you can text STOP at any time to pause and START to resume.
