Description
iPrecepts is an offline family academy, not another ebook that dumps classical text on the screen.
Start with Daily Precept. Read in Chinese and English, recite with highlights, compare voices across centuries, and study until a line stays.
The library keeps Zhu Xi's Family Precepts and Zhu Bailu's Household Maxims distinct. It also includes Yan Zhitui's Family Instructions in 20 chapters, Zhuge Liang's letters, selected Zeng Guofan family letters, Yuan Cai, Qian, Kangxi Court Instructions, and later short classics. About 118 passages, 384 sections, 93 famous lines, 14 authors. No account, ads, or tracking.
1. Daily Precept
A curated passage each day, with optional on-device alerts. Contextual picks can follow solar terms, festivals, and seasons. Home resumes your last read, refreshes a famous line, opens a random passage, and tracks a streak when you finish Study.
2. Two Zhu classics
Many apps merge Zhu Xi and Zhu Bailu into one book. This app does not. Zhu Xi speaks to the five relations; Zhu Bailu to household work and thrift. English is for study only, not a formal academic translation.
3. Close reading
Bilingual, Chinese only, or English only. Vernacular and study English toggle by paragraph. Long passages paginate by section. Vertical layout, type size, and pinyin with tones help recitation. Immersive mode hides chrome. UI: Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and English.
4. Recitation
Dual-language speech with section highlight, adjustable rate and voice. Playback can differ from the screen. Background audio, Now Playing, Lock Screen listening, and an optional Live Activity are supported.
5. Study
Four modes: fade, fill-in, detect, and quiz. Levels: Familiar, Learned, Mastered. Practice a long chapter by section. Batch-study favorites. Home has Precept Hunt: write a line that contains a given character.
6. Parallel Comparison
Pair lines across centuries under 12 themes, from teaching children and thrift to speech, friendship, and office. A Home Screen widget shows two lines side by side. The twelve themes also cover study, neighbors, rites, marriage, and public office, so a family can pick one question and hear more than one century answer it.
7. Browse and search
Browse by classic, author, or famous lines. Search titles and originals. Draw a character on supported devices. Spotlight is optional and off by default.
8. Favorites and notes
Heart a passage, build lists, write notes, and review history. The Favorites tab can be hidden; Home and links still open it.
9. Share cards
Twelve styles and several ratios. Share or save to Photos.
10. Widgets and shortcuts
Daily Precept, Famous Lines, Comparison, Study Progress, and Favorites, on Home, Lock Screen, and StandBy. Control Center, Siri, Shortcuts, and deep links open Daily, Study, Recite, Hunt, and Compare.
11. Ask Precept
On supported devices, an on-device model can explain a paragraph or compare two lines, offline, for study only. Core reading and Study do not need it.
12. Look and settings
Nine accents and seven iOS alternate icons. Replay the six-page tour in Help any time.
13. Privacy
Core texts work offline. Optional iCloud sync for favorites, lists, progress, history, and notes. iOS 17 and macOS 14 or later, on iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
14. How to start
Add a widget, open the Twin Zhu pair, recite a short piece, try Fade, then open a comparison on teaching children or thrift. Sectioned reading is the point. Parents can use one line at breakfast; overseas families can read together in two languages.
iPrecepts is an education app for families, self-study, and classroom support. Source texts are public domain. Vernacular notes and English are for learning, not a scholarly edition. May each line leave a little clarity in a busy day.
