Mona Radio

Mona Radio brings amateur radio into a modern Apple experience. Built for radio operators who care about both the radio and the experience around it, Mona Radio combines live spectrum and waterfall, RX audio, tuning and radio controls, mode-specific tools, diagnostics, and more in a native Apple interface. Mona Radio currently focuses on the Icom IC-705, with receive-side control and monitoring over your local network. Version 1.3 expands the experience with more radio controls, spectrum interaction, GPS and radio information, memory and mode tools, improved diagnostics, broader device layouts, and multilingual support. Built for the Apple ecosystem Mona is designed to grow across the Apple ecosystem. Today, iPhone keeps the radio with you, while iPad provides a larger operating surface. The interfaces are adapted to each device rather than simply stretching the same screen everywhere. Why Mona exists Mona Radio did not begin as a commercial exercise. It began with a simple idea: Good radio hardware can last for decades. The software experience around it should not have to stay in the past. Many radios still work beautifully long after the computers, operating systems, and software that once surrounded them have changed. We want to help those radios — new and old — find a place in today’s devices and workflows, without asking operators to replace perfectly good hardware. For many HAMs, a radio is also more than equipment. It may carry years of QSOs, experiments, friendships, late nights, distant voices, and memories. Extending the life of a radio can also preserve some of the memories carried with it. That idea will continue to guide Mona as support gradually expands to more radios, more connections, and more parts of the Apple ecosystem. Built carefully Radio state should tell the truth. Mona favours confirmed radio state, clear connection feedback, local-network operation, and diagnostics that help explain what is actually happening rather than hiding problems behind a generic error. New capabilities are added only after careful software and hardware validation. If something is not ready, Mona would rather leave it out than pretend otherwise. A project that can grow with the community Over time, we hope Mona can help give both modern and older radios a new software life. Some radios may be worth supporting not because they are commercially important, but simply because they still matter to the people who own them. And the knowledge gathered along the way — protocols, compatibility findings, hardware behavior, and diagnostic experience — is something we hope can eventually help the wider amateur-radio community as well.
