Name the new country. Choose where the capital will stand. Decide whether the new letters a king invented should be given to every commoner, over the objections of his own court. Every one of these events is drawn from the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty, the day-by-day record its court historians kept for five centuries. ■ THEN THE HISTORIAN COMES After you choose, the court historian takes up his brush: "In the actual annals, it is written thus." Match what really happened and you earn a fragment of the record. Choose differently and you see the Joseon that might have been. History is never a gate your child has to pass. It is the reward for playing. ■ A COUNTRY THAT CARRIES OVER Four measures — People, Treasury, Defense, Culture — pass to the next king exactly as you leave them. A prosperous people pay taxes; a change of rulers scatters some of what the last reign built.
